An Instagram influencer is essentially someone who influences others to partake in an activity or purchase a product through the creation of a post they posted on Instagram. An influencer is often considered to be someone with a high number of followers that also has a high ratio of interaction, or influence, among their fans. Models, Brands, Bloggers are just some of the influencers who use Instagram to influence their followers.
How many followers do I need?
If by now you’re wondering how many followers you need to make it happen, the short answer is “not as many as you think”. The long answer depends on factors that range from:
- What niche you’re in and how easily you can directly tie it to a product category (fashion, food, beauty, and fitness are popular niches, based on top hashtags)
- How engaged your followers are (Having 100K followers that don’t engage won’t help you or bring you much profit).
- Which revenue channels will you explore.
Naturally, the more engaged followers you have, the better! An account with a million followers that averages only a few likes or comments per post wouldn’t be considered an influencer for example. However, another account with only a few thousand followers which receives a few hundred likes or comments per post could very well be considered an influencer as their followers are seen to respect their opinion and support whatever content they create.

There are good, bad and ugly methods for getting followers. We recommend sticking to the good methods, but we will share with you the different ways people can get followers and the risks/benefits that come with each.

We recommend this good methods of getting followers. It is slow, and at times frustrating to see others who hack their way to fame around you. But getting followers, the good way is authentic, sustainable and will eventually have a much higher return on your investment. Here are some tips to organically grow your audience.
Create High-quality Instagram posts
There is nothing else that will help you become an Instagram Influencer except the content that you create. According to one study, about 95 million new photos and videos are shared on Instagram each day. As an Instagram influencer, it’s your job to create uniquely compelling content that stands out from the torrent flooding followers’ feeds. Instagram has too many photos of meals, cats, and beaches, so make sure to upload pictures that are different from the rest to catch readers’ eyes. Filters are always a great option to add a ‘real’ feeling to your photos and make your pictures look less mundane.
Write delightful, share-worthy captions.
Write a caption that is funny or interesting to also catch the reader’s’ eye. Photos and videos might be the most important part of your Instagram posts, but captions should never be an afterthought. They’re an essential part of your post — icing on the cake, if you will. Consistently great captions can do wonders for humanizing your brand, winning over followers, and making your content more shareable — thereby giving you more exposure. Another way to increase the shareability of your caption and engage your followers is to ask questions or have some sort of call-to-action in the captions of your photos. For example, you might say, “double-tap if you find this funny” or “share your story in the comments.” In the example below, we asked followers to share photos of their desk with the @HubSpot Instagram account for the chance to be featured.
Use relevant Hashtags
With each picture, you should make sure you use hashtags, which are short words and phrases that describe and categorize each picture. Hashtags can act as a way of appearing on the map. They can help people search for your picture and add your image to current trends. While using broad hashtags may not get you as much exposure as you’d hope, more unique, targeted hashtags that speak to the theme of your account will do you a lot of good and even might get you featured on the explore section. If your image becomes one of the top images in a particular hashtag, many people will start following you because they liked your photo. Hashtags are incredibly important for gaining followers. However, limit yourself to only a few hashtags per picture. If there are too many hashtags, the reader will think the picture is too spammy and could stop following you or not share or comment. Similarly, don’t use “like for like” hashtags, like #like4like or #like4likes. This is a dirty tactic that’ll leave you with a whole bunch of low-quality followers. Once you build up a bit of a following, you can try creating your own hashtags — like your company name or a slogan that applies to a lot of your photos. This is a great way to build up your brand on the platform and build a more cohesive presence.
Interact with other users including your followers
Aside from simply posting pictures, you should get involved in the community. You should like other pages similar to your own and like or comment on their pictures. Following accounts that showcase similar interests as you, or the ones that really inspire you is very important. They will see that you do so, and potentially follow you back if they like your content as well. It is very important that you interact with the people behind the accounts that follow you. Respond to questions and comments that people leave on your pictures. People love when they are responded to, especially when it comes to brands and pictures they particularly like. Similarly, you should ask your followers questions. This will increase the number of comments you get and increase interaction. For example, you can say ‘share your story too’ or ‘double tap if you found this funny. As you build a following, celebrate your followers and show you appreciate them by responding to their comments, and even following them and engaging with their posts.
Cross-promote with users who have audiences similar to your own.
Once you build a solid relationship with some of the folks behind these accounts that have a similar audience to your own, you might ask to do some co-promotion on each others’ accounts. How? S4S (Shout-out for Shout-out)! Shout outs can be a fantastic way to increase your exposure, and if done correctly, shoutouts are one of the fastest, most effortless ways to gain followers. The best way to do a shout-out is to make it look like is not a shout-out. The more natural and less spammy you can make the content of these cross-promotions — especially the captions — the better. It also helps to be picky about them, and don’t do them very often.
Use the features of Instagram
Instagram has been releasing a lot of features that you can leverage to grow your audience. All of these can be used to gain popularity and foothold in the field of your choice. Location: Instagram allows its users to post demographic specific posts which then is visible to anyone who searches for that place. Users also love to know where pictures are taken. With every picture, geotag the picture, if possible. On top of that, Instagram also pulls up other pictures from that location, therefore, other users who geotag with that same location will see your picture and could go to your profile and potentially start following you. This is a feature that can be used in both a post and a story is the perfect to bring new people to your account. Instagram Stories: Instagram Stories try to appeal to the short attention span of a human being. Whether it’s funny, sad, or unique, be authentic. Use Stories to share the other side of your brand that followers might not be able to glean elsewhere. Do you have a dog-friendly office? Is your team trying out the Mannequin Challenge? When using all Social Media sites, you have to think about logistics. Such as, when is the best time to post content. One of the best ways to increase your Instagram engagement is to post when your audience is most active. Your followers’ feeds are constantly updating with content from many different pages, so it is easy for your content to get lost in the sea of their newsfeed. The best times to post content is in the morning and after hours of their work. Instagram photos only last about 4 hours in their newsfeed, so make sure to not post in the middle of the night, for they might not see the photo at all. Make sure to spread your photos out. If you have many photos you want to share, do not post them all at once, spread them out over a couple of days. If you post them all at once, people will simply skip over photos, thus, not getting the attention it deserves. On the other hand, if you don’t post often enough, you will have difficulty maintaining followers and drawing new ones, so make sure to keep a good balance.
